German

A few days ago, I was thinking about time.
The difference a year can make...
It can take a frightful night and turn it into a wonderful story to be shared with friends.
Time can make reality seem like a distant dream.
It can change perspectives, personalities and love.
LOVE!
Time has such a strange way with love, it can hold tightly to it, or let it fly away to rest with the forgotten or unmentioned moments of your history.
I am discussing this with you now, because I have a story to tell you.
BOY DO I HAVE A STORY TO TELL YOU!
But, time... it's a funny thing, although this happened almost six months ago, it still seems so precious. So, perfect, that sharing it seems personal, and exciting. I don't mind sharing personal things on this blog, that's why I made it, silly!
I guess
I just don't know how this story ends, which makes it seem unfinished.
So, in my handmade journal that I took with me everywhere on my travels this spring, lies a story...
A story that goes a little something like this:

This is the story of my German romance in New Zealand

I was dropped off in a small surfer town on the western coast of New Zealand. Left on the side of the road in my only pair of clean clothes and my dirty backpack weighing down my heart and my body. I had come to this small town in search of adventure and myself. But when my fellow travelers dropped me off I instantly felt lost. I had no idea what I was doing in this small town. On a whim and random recommendations I had followed the curvy back roads to here. Here, being Raglan. A summer surf town where every store closes at 4:00 and most of the houses stay empty for the majority of the year. Barefooted and backpacked, I tried my luck and asked a local if there was a hostel near by.

A New Zealand native with a thick accent told me about Raglan Backpackers, the only and best place to stay. A place that was "sweet as" And, wow, was it. As I checked in, I noticed the hammocks, hot tub, community kitchen and the gorgeous view of the bay. A sweet Swedish girl named Anna showed me around the place and curiously asked me more about myself... I noticed that everyone I saw seemed to already know each other, and if they didn't they were asking. The new faces and accents were as vast as the ocean around us. As I dropped off my heavy backpack in the 12 person dorm room that would be my home for the next week, a brown haired boy, with skin the color of cream toffee and eyes as clear and green as the deep sea smiled at me from his bunk.
The first thought that went through my head as I picked my bed and settled in was something like: "Oh, no you don't girly, not again."
As I found myself giving my heart a mental pep-talk I grabbed my stuff as quickly as possible and ran outside. Headed for the black sand beaches, knowing that fresh air and squeaky sand was the best remedy for a fluttered and cluttered head.

When I got back, his alarmingly white teeth were there again, "We're having a barbeque tonight, would you like anything?" He said in a thick German accent.
To be completely honest, I don't remember what I said, (partially stunned by his good looks, and partially in awe of his kindness) all I know, is that watching him cut up potatoes, mince garlic and de-stem rosemary was better than most New Zealand sunsets. He smiled with such ease, laughing at the little things and danced around the kitchen as he cooked. His friends and him cracked jokes in broken English, sliding back into fast German when they got deep into discussion. For the first time, I found myself wishing I spoke German. How did I not notice how sexy it was until now?? By the end of the night, I was so rapped up in his charisma, that I found myself saying that I wanted to learn to surf. Tomorrow.
Wait, I said WHAT?
Not only am I deathly afraid of the ocean, but I am one of the least likely people to be found in the water when there is perfectly good sand to be suntanning on nearby. But, with the help of my new German friends, I found myself wiggling into a wet suit the very next day.
I only lasted about 45 minutes in the water, getting pushed, bashed and shoved to the bottom of the cold, and fierce ocean... before even getting on to the board. But, I say to this day, that 25 dollars was worth seeing his warn body strip out of a wet suit later that day.
That night, I drank a bottle of wine, and laughed as him and his friends sat with me by the cool ocean on the path down to the ocean. Listening to country music for the first time (for them) and watching his two friends getting higher, and higher. Giggling more and more as the night got darker and the clouds passed over the moon. That night, I noticed his confidence. He sang and danced with an ease that is hard to find anywhere. We held hands for split second, then went our separate ways for bed.
The next day, we wanted to see who would get tipsier off one bottle of wine (my tolerance being at an all time high) The whole day was spent hot tubing in the rain, playing Australian football, (which included a little bit of flirting and way too much giggling on my part.)

That night, I learned more about him than I have most people I have known for years. It was raining out, and so we sat under a porch, listening to the rain, and to songs on an i-pod and shared stories about our past, present and future. I learned that he is one of the middle children of four kids, he sang "Oh Christmas tree" in german, just the way my grandpa sings it every year at Christmas... It went back and forth like that for a long time, the deep stuff, the dreams and worries, the laughter and giggles.
It was a full moon, he kept looking at me under deep, dark lashes... I knew then that we were going to kiss. I was scared, as I usually am, that in one single second it could all be gone. The excitement, the magic, the smiles...
But then we kissed.
We kissed and I forgot my name.
I forgot where I was and I forgot how to breath.
My head floated out of my body and watched the whole thing take place.
The way he put his hand on my neck, the way he looked at me.
The way he whispered that he could kiss me forever.
My head watched it all.
And I felt like the happiest girl in all of New Zealand.
Me?
He liked kissing me?
Frizzy haired me?
He did! And we did, until we fell asleep holding each others hands tightly. Both. Because one was not enough.

The next day was another spent on the beach, me, thinking through my life (as per usual) and him, showing off his talent on a surf board. We held hands, built sandcastles, and ran down the beach screaming at the waves. Even looking at him made my heart flutter.
How did this end up happening? This feeling in my heart? And did I really just have tonight with him?
After dinner we went for a walk, he hold me about his sisters, his life and the stuff that I usually avoid talking about with guys, the stuff that hurts for them to share. Yet, it didn't have the same weight as some peoples stories. His love for his family emanated out of him when he shared stories about them, and I could tell then that the crinkles around his eyes from smiling were permanently there. We shared one last night kissing and whispering early into the morning. And then, as soon as it was here- that feeling- those feelings- he was gone. Our last morning together was spent holding hands, kissing sweetly, trying to put unsaid wishes and intentions into each kiss. Each look. As I walked him and his friends to the bus stop, my heart hurt and ached. We shared our last look and kiss on the front steps of the Raglan library. And then my German romance left.
He was gone. Gone away.

Welcome To The World Baby Nephew!

Dear Baby,
My name is Hannah and I am your biggest fan.
I am also your auntie.
Which doesn't mean much to some...
but to me baby boy, you are my world.
And that means that already I am planning for our future together.
Oh how I can't wait to take you on your first adventure camping in the woods.
I also can't wait to teach you all sorts of bad words so that you'll repeat them to your mommy and daddy.
I can't wait to snuggle with you and kiss your soft round cheeks, which are the most perfect things I have ever seen.
I can't wait to run around with you.
Teaching you the best places to hide at Full Belly Farm.
I can't wait to help you with homework and girl problems.
I will be there for you baby.
Through it all.
I will hold your hand as we cross the street
and help you decide what car you should get.
I will wish you luck on tests and football games and first dates.
I will hold you in my arms when your momma is giving birth to a younger sister or brother for you to play with.
I will tell you you are my favorite.
Because everyone deserves to hear it.
And because I will always mean it.
I will love you forever, baby.
You are the most precious thing in the whole wide world and I can't even begin to
describe how lucky you are to have chosen this family to live with for the next 18 years of your life.
These two parents already love you more than any other thing in this world.
More than cooking or their dog Milo.
They think you are the most perfect thing in the whole world.
They couldn't stop staring at you when I saw you for the first time last night.
And I don't blame them.
How could you possibly stop looking and stop loving a small person as perfect and squishy as you?
You don't. You just can't.
I love you to the moon and back again.

Love from,
Your auntie H.

Summer Food

Summer on the farm is one of my favorite times.
Not only is it hot as "balls" here, which I LOVE.
But it is also filled to the BRIM with fresh produce.
YUM.
This week is one of my "weeks off" where there are no campers asking me questions about the kinds of cows we have, or tugging on my sleeve asking me to go check out the goats with them.

Unfortunately... living away from the farm for a while has given me limited knowledge about the names of the cows and the sex of the goats.
Last week I told one of the campers that we had a cow named blossom, when really, that certain cow has been dead for over 7 years.
Last week I also told a few campers that the goat Buckwheat that we fed every morning is a male.
Good thing those campers weren't here THIS week to see Buckwheat the "male" give birth to TWO beautiful babies.
Oops.
Anyway, this week I have been making lunch. A lot of lunch.
Every day the interns, farm owners and farm kids sit down to lunch together. Usually, each intern has a day that they cook for the crew. (about 15 people usually.) well, because I didn't feel like making tomato boxes for 7 days straight I made myself  a chef at every meal prepared this week.
The sad bit is that I can't find my camera at the moment so I didn't get to capture any pictures of the incredible meals that I made this week, but I will explain a few of them for your drooling pleasure.

Monday:
Fried Green Tomatoes
Corn Chowder
Cheesy Bread
Lemon cucumber salad
Peach and Strawberry cobbler

Wednesday:
Homemade tacos
Gazpacho
Watermelon fresca
Full belly farm beans
Rice
Peach salsa
Ice cream with frozen fruit toppings

Thursday:
Corn fritters
cucumber salad
Jalapeno poppers
Peach salsa
watermelon, melon salad with mint
chicken salad
grape juice
...

You get the point.
Everything was the best I've every had.
I love cooking with fresh produce that I don't have to pay for but sometimes have to pick.
I couldn't ask for a better place to be in the summer.
Because this post is missing some pictures I'll add some in...
pictures of my farm.
Some that you may have already seen, but I don't care.

Things I'm Going to Miss.

Let me say first and foremost that I am DAMN excited to adventure into the land of the unknown in less than 48 hours.
Damn excited, I say.
Now that I got that out in the open, comes the REAL reason that I wrote this blog post:

My sister asked me the other day (after I had been home for a whopping six hours) if I had to choose between leaving the Capay Valley forever or having to stay in the Capay Valley forever, what I would pick.
If you had asked me two years ago I would answered honestly in a heart beat,
'get me as far away from this place as possible. I don't want to ever come back.'
Harsh. Yes. I know.
But when you live close to something for so long you start to despise everything about it.
Especially when that place has annoying siblings, high school memories and chickens.
Yet, the other day when my sister asked me that question I actually said that I would stay.
STAY, I SAY!!
Crazy. I know.
But the truth is,
I love the people here.
I love the community and the way that everyone knows everyone.
I love that we all share a connection and passion for food and learning.
And yes, I understand that staying here forever would mean missing out on a lot of adventures, but if I can't be surrounded by the people that I love I don't want to experience any of it.
I love sharing my life with the folk of Full Belly Farm and the Capay Valley... and even Eugene Oregon.
I can't picture my life with out those people and as I travel to distant places and experience new things that becomes much more clear.
So, in memory of those times, friends and family members that I am going to miss a whole heck'of'a'lot when I am away I give you this:
A list (in no particular order) of some fun times that I am going to cherish no matter when in the world I am.
The Roommate. Pretzel Price.

I hate to say this, but I actually think I will miss studying for classes. Yeah. Wow.

Good friends and great study parties.

Sunshine in Eugene.

Well, the Urban Farm o'course.

Walking to classes.

The kind of beautiful place I call home.

These folks. They're pretty swell.

Best friends.

Drinking wine with the family. (Ignore the wine teeth.)

Sunshine with the siblings in Lake Tahoe.

My sister....

The sillyness and giggles.

The romance.

Do you think that they have Frozen Yogurt in New Zealand?

Half-drunk and fully silly photo sessions with the Roommate.
Well, it's been fun ya'll and I know I'll be back soon... maybe then I actually WILL stay in one place forever.
As of now... Ta'ta and see you on the other side.

Things I've Learned From My Siblings.

I have two older brothers and one older sister. (Two if you include my brothers wife, which I do.)
Wanna meet them?
Meet Hallie
Meet Rye
Yup.
I am the youngest.
The baby.
(Although I did have a dream that my mom was pregnant again. Haha Yeah, that's soooo not happening. Everyone knows parents don't have sex after a certain age... RIGHT?)

Anyway... Yeah. I am the baby.
I am pretty sure I am permanently 12 in most of my family members eyes.
Forever burned in to their mind as a scrawny girl... hair parted down the middle with gap-teeth, acne and braces.
Cool.
It's really okay though, I wouldn't have it any other way most of the time.
My siblings are awesome.
They rock at just being alive.
They have taught me a lot about the world.
Including but not limited to:

1. BBQ sauce makes anything taste better. ANYTHING.

2. Never keep a diary around the house.

3. Never try to have your own pet. Especially a cat.

4. You can quote any movie anytime. It always applies. It is always relevant.

5.  If you are ever looking for the T.V. cord DO NOT look in mom and dad's closet.

6. Musical instruments are the best form of torture.

7. If you say "Please" before you stay stop they are actually more likely to stop. Who knew?

8. Pinning someone down and letting Mister (our dog) lick their face NEVER gets old.

9. Pretending you are dead/dying also never gets old.

10. You can convince anyone of ANYTHING if you try hard enough.

11. It is never going to be your Golden Year at Christmas.
It is always moms Golden Year at Christmas.
No matter who tells you it's going to be your Golden Year.
Never.

12. Following Dad around is the best way to find candy at Easter.
He somehow always know where the Easter bunny laid an egg.
YOU SNEEAAAKKKYYY DAD!!
13. Dancing while cleaning up the kitchen makes the job go by ten times as fast.

14. Cleaning the Bathroom is the best chore to sign up for because it is relatively small compared to the rest of the house.

15. If you talk to dad at the kitchen table long enough after dinner sometimes you can find yourself with out any chores left.

16. The 2 minute walk to take the compost to the chickens could very well be the longest walk in the world.

17. Always go shopping with dad two days before Christmas. It's when he's feeling the most generous.

18. If you EVER need to get on mom's good side clean the pantry or the fridge.
 Or promise Grandchildren.
19. Don't ever get a tattoo. And if you do? Repeat #18 for the rest of your life.

20. Always ask dad to write down his to-do list... or else you are bound to forget at least 12 things.

Yeah, we're suuuupppperrrr fun.

Marry Me.

As you all should know by now, I am obsessed with weddings.
But, the sad thing is... being obsessed with weddings is not really socially acceptable when you aren't even dating anyone.
I know.
Strange.
I have come to this conclusion by the awkward look I get when I am talking to a boy and I somehow end up blurting out that I am obsessed with weddings.
I think that they end up getting the wrong impression.
Like, I'm one of those crazy ladies who start planning the wedding as soon as she meets a boy...
Well, I'm not like that.... really!
I swear.
I am more the kind of girl who plans other peoples weddings.
Or, dreams about weddings...
Or, will spend hours on end looking up wedding sites and ideas on the interweb because they are pretty.
Or, the kind of of girl who will cry at the simplest wedding videos...
Or, the kind of girl who has been planning her wedding since she was five.

The whole obsession thing is weird, seeing how I am not in any hurry to find "the one" and I often have a hard time believing in happy endings.
Yet, here I am... a college educated feminist with a sweet tooth for weddings and babies.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME, GUYS??

Well, until I figure out the answer to that...
I have a fever and the only cure is more cow bell...
(Or weddings)
For your listening pleasure:

For your eyes:

Gosh, I'm strange.

Welp, off to find my future husband....
Bye.

The L word.

Love is a many splendid thing.
All you need is love.
Love lifts us up where we belong.
Love is all around us.
Love has made a circle that holds us all inside.
I love you like a love song, baby.
Love me, love me, say that you'll love me.
L. is for the way you look tonight.

I have a strong opinions about love.
My opinion about love is that NO ONE should have the right to have an opinion about how another loves.
Or who they love.
Or what they love.
Or how they love.
Love is different for everyone.
It wacky, strange, wonderful and beautiful.
It can change, morph and grow.
It can be everlasting or short-lived.
It can be comforting or dangerous.
It can be the kind of love you see in fairy tales, or the kind that makes you want to run for the hills.
It makes us do silly things that maybe one day we will look back on with regret and sadness.
But in the moment it feels so perfect...
So, right...

Oh, I bet you are wondering who I have been in love with...
As I rant about love.
I must be a master.
I must know all the ins and outs of love.
Well, here it is:
I have never been "In Love" with a man or women.
At least,
Not in societies sense of the word.
But,
I have come to the conclusion that for me, there is little difference in romantic love and platonic love.
I love everyone about the same.
I do not think that love has to mean having sex.
There is a difference between sex and love.
(Although I think it's smart to attach the two)
I find myself falling in love with total strangers and my best friends.
I find myself loosing myself to each of my new acquaintances.
Doing silly things to impress them.
Trying to make them love me, like I think I love them.
This is why I don't think I can ever hold a grudge for longer than a day.
Because I love everyone enough that it doesn't matter if they were mean to me yesterday...
I forgive them.
I love them and want to make it work.
No matter what.
I find myself running back to people that should have been left out of my life along time ago.

Yes, I realize this will one day be my downfall.
I am thankful that I haven't ever fallen for someone who has realized that trait about me.
Because that downfall could give them power over me.
A dangerous power.

But, I think that love is one of those things that we should try to make work, no matter what.
If you were once in love, I believe you can be in love again.

Maybe not in the same way...
I understand that sometimes breaking up is the BEST THING someone can do to continue loving someone.
But, I believe that love is what you make it.
It is what you need it to be.
It takes different forms at different times in your life.
There is a beauty in each kind of love.

I find it ridiculous that any one person, religion, or society try to tell us who we should love.
If someone wants to marry their best friend, who are we as a society to say that that isn't real love?
The people that limit their love to sexual relationships are missing out!
Falling in love with someone makes you realize a little bit more about yourself.
It opens your eyes to a new way of life and new part of your soul.
It opens your eyes to the wonders of each person, the ups and the downs.

Okay, enough about love...
What I love even more?
Crushes.
I still crush on people like I am in middle school.
I still giggle, smile like an idiot and make a fool of myself.
I still babble and stumble around my sentences and words.
I still become speechless if I stand too close to someone I like.
I still replay moments in my head...
And blush when a cute person walks by.
I LOVE crushes.
They are what make me want to look good when I walk outside.
They are what make me walk a certain way to class.
I am way too obvious when I like someone.
But, in my opinion, why SHOULDN'T I be?
If I like someone, I would rather be upfront about it rather than wondering for the rest of my life
"What if?"

All that being said, the only crush I have on anything right now is this song:
Enjoy!

Babies. Continued.

So, if you remember, from an earlier post, I plan on adopting all of my future children.
How I see it?
There are HECKA (I say that word sarcastically) babies out in this huge world already.
Most of them with out good families, love or food.
Well, instead of pushing another one out of my privates, into this crazy world of ours.
My plan is to help give a warm, peaceful, happy childhood to those who need it most.
I want:
To smile at those kids who don't have smiles.
To exclaim loudly and obnoxiously when they do something ordinary.
To dance around with them before I tuck them in to a cozy bed.
To kiss their face each morning, reminding them they are no longer alone.
I want:
To help them explore our backyard and the rest of the world.
To help kids turn into students and builders and adventurers.
I WANT:
To give a child who may have had nothing... everything!
The moon, the stars and my heart.

As you can tell, having my OWN babies has NOTHING to do with the fact that I don't like babies...

 I LOVE babies.
I can't get enough of their squishy little faces and small pudgy arms.
I love the way they smell and their big, soft, round eyes.
I love their open minds and kind hearts.
I love their curiosity for the little things and the way that they will love you at the end of night...
No matter how bad the world is getting.

I love babies so much I can't hold it in any longer...

I am going to be an Aunt!

My brother Amon, and his wife Jenna are having a small baby in August!
The news is slowly leaking out, so I think it's about time I can tell you all.
Because I am just so damn excited!
I am going to love this little baby with every inch of my heart.
When they told us about a week after New Years I instantly started crying, which surprised even me.
I had no idea why I was so happy.
I mean, yeah, it's a baby, it's cool and little and squishy, but did I really need to start blubbering about it??
Well, yes.
I did.
I do.
Because, being someone who believes that everyone deserves to be hugged, warm and well fed.
I feel happy.
Because, if there are any fit and capable parents in the world, it's these two.
They have enough love to generate electricity, they have a cozy home and cook delicious food.
And
If they love this baby half as much as they love their dog Milo, I know this small lump of a thing will be just fine.
I am going to be an Aunt, guys.
I am going to buy baby clothes and snuggle and hold that baby until it turns blue
(Not really, I'll be careful I swear)
I am going to love the HECK of of that small morsel of a thing and I know that the rest of our community will too.
I can't wait for August.
I can't wait for the future, because this baby is just the beginning of a whole new life.

Meet the Roommate.

Alright, I have put it off long enough.
It's about time that I tell you about my roommate.
Because my roommate is awesome.
Simply put.
But, to the ordinary eye, her awesomeness might somehow get overlooked at first.
Horrible, but true.
So to help you all understand her greatness and for the sake of entertainment...
I have constructed a Roommate time-line.
And a few pictures to liven it up...
I was just going to use horrible pictures of the two of us, because I have enough to blackmail her for a life time...
But in the sake of being kind, and the fact that I don't ever want her future employer to know I have some pictures of her doing questionable things... I will save us both and keep them off the interweb.
So, let the story begin!
It all started two years ago.
September 20th... I think. When I had my first thought.
^

^
Damn, this girl is tall.
^
Damn, this girl is going to be living with me for a whole year.
^

^
Damn, this girl is freaking sarcastic.
^

^
Damn, this girl can DRINK!
^

^
Damn, this girl is brilliant.
^

^
Damn, this girl likes Justin Beiber just as much as I do.
^

^
Damn, this girl is awesome.
^
Damn, this girl could possibly be my best friend.
^

^
Damn, this girl is competitive.
^
Damn, this girl is going to be in my wedding.
^

^
Damn, this girl is good at beer pong.
^
Damn, I am really going to miss this girl when I'm gone.
^

^
No, but in all honesty, Ellen, my roommate has been there for me through one of the most awkward transitions of my life. She has seen me go from a girl fresh out of high school... who made stupid mistakes and couldn't keep up with the roommates wit, to a slightly more focused, a lot more witty and prettier, sophomore.
She calls me out on my shit. She lets me know when I make stupid decisions and look silly in an outfit. She cooks me dinner and snuggles with me when I am a bit intoxicated.
I know she will always have my back, because we lived too close to each other for a year, that NOT having her back would be impossible...
She knows that I will always have HER back, whether it's finding her perfect man, or punching someone in the face when they call her a tall bastard. (true story) I am already planning her wedding and planning how she is going to fit into the rest of my life.
I am so glad I got randomly selected to room with the tall, ginger-by-choice, sarcastic, brilliant and goofy girl that continues to be one of my greatest friends.
I am going to miss her like crazy come spring time!
( I know full well that she is cringing at the amount of sap that is in this post)
It is true. Our whole relationship is built on the fact that we can yell, kick and ditch the other, so me being this sweet and caring is really something new.
But, it had to be done eventually.
Sorry.
